Important: Childcare regulations vary significantly by state and even by county. KinderCare maintains an active database of state licensing boards and childcare statutes — updated quarterly — to ensure every sitter profile reflects current local requirements. Families are encouraged to verify that any sitter they hire holds the credentials required in their jurisdiction.

How KinderCare Compliance Works

Before a sitter can accept bookings, they pass through four stages of compliance review specific to their state.

1

Document Submission

Sitters upload required credentials, licenses, and training certificates through our secure document portal during onboarding.

2

State Regulation Check

Our compliance engine maps the sitter's location to that state's specific childcare laws, licensing thresholds, and ratio requirements.

3

Background Screening

A multi-source background check is run — including sex offender registries, national criminal databases, and child abuse clearances.

4

Compliance Badge Issued

Sitters who pass all checks receive a state-specific KinderCare Compliance Badge, visible to families on their profile.

Core Compliance Requirements

Regardless of state, all KinderCare sitters must meet these baseline federal and platform-level standards.

NCIC database search covering felonies, misdemeanors, and sex offender registry in all 50 states.

  • 🧒

Checked against the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) and applicable state child protective services registries.

  • 🚗

    Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

Required for sitters who offer transportation as part of their services. Pulled directly from state DMV records.

  • 🏥

    CPR / First Aid Certification

Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification from a recognized provider (Red Cross, AHA, or equivalent). Must be current and unexpired.

  • 🪪

    Government-Issued ID Verification

Identity confirmed via driver's license, passport, or state ID using document verification technology.

Minimum two professional or character references contacted and verified by the KinderCare compliance team.

Understanding Compliance Badges

Every sitter profile displays a real-time compliance status so families know exactly where each sitter stands.

Badges are automatically updated when documents expire, are renewed, or when state regulations change. Sitters are notified 30 days before any credential expires.

KinderCare Verified ✓

All state and federal requirements met. Background clear. Documents current.

Verification Pending

Documents submitted and under review. Expected completion within 48 hours.

Renewal Required

One or more credentials are expiring soon. Sitter has been notified to renew.

Compliance Hold

Sitter cannot accept bookings until outstanding compliance requirements are resolved.

What happens if a sitter's state requirements change after they're verified?
KinderCare monitors state childcare regulation updates quarterly. If a regulation change affects a sitter's existing credentials, we automatically flag their account and notify them of the new requirement. Their compliance badge will show "Renewal Required" until the updated documentation is submitted and approved.
